Last week the Daily News ran a series of articles blaming city workers for Los Angeles' current budget crisis. As part of those articles, the newspaper posted city workers' salaries, departments and classification online, exposing some of the union's most vulnerable members. Many City workers have legitimate reasons for identity protection, particularly victims of domestic violence, and need to be able to expect a level of privacy. Airport Guides Win Half-Time Status and Benefits After Joining AFSCME 3090
After months of negotiations, Airport management has agreed to AFSCME’s proposal that all Airport Guide positions should be, from their first day of employment half time positions with full benefits.
For VSR/VIR program this means that employees will no longer need to wait two years before being eligible for benefits. For the Ambassador program, it means employees will no longer be denied health and retirement benefits.
This means all current employees will be given the option of increasing their work hours to 20, becoming LASER Certified and eligible for benefits, or if they choose, remain as an intermittent employee working less than 20 hours.
The guides are mostly stationed in the terminals greet visitors from around the world, helping them to find their way in the Airport. They are many visitors first contact with a city employee. After a successful organizing drive, the Airport Guides voted to join AFSCME Local 3090 in 2007.

By Jan. 30, you will see the full 4% raise reflected in your paychecks.

Governor Warns of Painful Cuts in Services
Calling on California to face its "budget demons," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger warned in his annual State of the State speech on Tuesday that painful cuts are ahead this year, and he proposed going to voters to seek a spending cap on future budgets.
Healthcare Costs Topped $2 Trillion in 2006
The nation's healthcare bill climbed above $2 trillion in 2006, averaging a record $7,026 per person, according to a government report released today. The report is likely to intensify the presidential campaign debate over curbing costs and covering the nation's 47 million uninsured.
AFL-CIO Honors Martin Luther King, Jr.
The AFL-CIO will hold its 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday observance on Jan. 17–21 in Memphis, Tenn., to mark the 40th anniversary of the Memphis sanitation workers' strike. This strike involved hundreds of men who dared to take a stand for dignity and respect on the job by seeking a voice at work with AFSCME. The strike also marked Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final campaign. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968 while supporting these striking workers.

AFSCME 3090 Trustee Vas Singh Helps Organize India Independence Day Celebration
Vas Singh, treasurer of the India Association of Los Angeles, helped organize the celebration of the 60th anniversary of India Independence Day on Aug. 28 at Pierce College. Thousands turned out to the event, which featured entertainment from local performers as well as a variety of booths.
