Protect City Workers' Privacy
Write Controller Laura Chick Today Asking Her to Protect Your Identity
Last week the Daily News in a series of articles blamed city workers for Los Angeles' current budget crisis. As part of those articles, they posted city workers' salaries, departments and classification online, exposing some of the union's most vulnerable members. Many City workers have legitimate reasons for identity protection and need to be able to expect a level of privacy, particularly victims of domestic violence.
Local 3090 President Alice Goff has written Controller Chick a strong letter objecting to the way the Controller's office turned over the legally-required information to the newspaper, stating that the local received no forewarning and therefore was unable to protect our members from possible harm. When the same situation came up with the Orange County Register, the county management worked with AFSCME to ensure that sensitive names of members were withheld.
Please write to Controller Chick today voicing your concern about invasion of privacy of city workers.
