Don’t Believe the Contract Rumors

• Retroactive Money to be Paid Before End of Fiscal Year

As you have probably been hearing in the news, the City of Los Angeles is facing a major budget crisis, and will likely have trouble meeting its financial responsibilities in the coming year. Because the figures are not yet in on how large the final deficit will be, many Local 3090 members are understandably anxious and uncertain.

But don't believe the rumors you are hearing around the water cooler.

AFSCME 3090, along with all the other unions that make up the Coalition of Los Angeles City Unions, has a legally binding contract it negotiated with the City. That contact is in effect until June of 2012. Furthermore, members will be receiving their retroactive payouts in the next several months. Staffing shortages have made the payouts go slower than we had first expected.

“Before the end of this fiscal year, June 30, the retroactive monies will be paid out to our members,” noted Local 3090 President Alice Goff. “The retroactive pay is a signed part of the contract. There are no give backs on this.”

In addition, there are also false rumors circulating about potential layoffs. Yes, the Mayor has announced that the City is formally preparing for layoffs, but this does not mean that layoffs are imminent. There are still many other budget solutions to explore, and we are part of those ongoing discussions. City officials must take many steps before reaching a final decision on layoffs.

Your retroactive monies will be paid out. Your job is secure. Don't let rumors get the best of you.

If you hear a rumor, please let us know. The rumor control online mailbox is: info@citycoalition.com . And by all means, if you have suggestions on how the City can increase its revenues, we want to hear from you. Please send your suggestions to Mark Siegel at: msiegel@afscme36.org . We will make sure to deliver your suggestions to the Mayor and City Council.
