This Labor Day, Our Struggle Continues
This Labor Day Local 3090 members, along with working people in general, are facing serious challenges. Not only are we fighting back against layoffs and furloughs, recently City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana tried to circumvent the process and force health care cost increases on us. For many years, the Joint Labor-Management Benefits Committee has been the body through which the unions and management have worked cooperatively to construct the health care plans and keep premiums affordable. This method has been beneficial to the workers and also to the City.

Fighting Back to Save Our City
July/Aug. 2010
I don’t need to tell you these are drastic times. The mayor and city council have undertaken a short-sighted and ruinous approach to the city’s deficit crisis. Because they have initiated layoffs and furloughs, city services are being cut without an eye to the long term damage to this city. For instance, the recreation centers at our parks are closed or seeing reduced hours during the summer, at the very time when our children most need those services. Parks have always been safe havens for our city’s youth - places where they can engage in constructive activities.

Laying Off its Workers is Bad for the City
As I noted in an L.A. Times op-ed last month that I co-authored with SEIU 721 President Bob Schoonover, “There is no more important thing for our city to do right now than to keep its people, and the city, working. Laying off workers is bad for our neighborhoods, bad for local businesses and bad for the fragile housing market. And there is an alternative.”

Don’t Believe the Rumors about Secret Backroom Deals
May 14, 2010
No, Local 3090, nor any other union that is part of the Coalition of L.A. City Unions, is having secret meetings in smoke-filled back rooms where shady characters are agreeing to member furloughs or layoffs.

$400 Million in Uncollected Taxes is Good Place for City to Start Looking for Savings
Feb. 5, 2010
Let’s be clear, our union as part of the Coalition for L.A. City Unions has done more than its fair share of sacrifice in this continuing budget crisis the City of Los Angeles faces. At this time, City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana along with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other City officials seek to eliminate more than 1,500 city jobs to help close a $208 million budget gap.
