I want to take this opportunity to wish a very happy holiday season to all our members and their families. There’s no doubt 2011 was a tough year for public sector employees around the country. And we’ve certainly taken our lumps as workers in the City of LA, with budget cuts, furloughs, layoffs and threats of pension reform.

AFSCME praises judges decision to block cuts to in-home care

A big win for AFSCME:

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken of Oakland issued a court order late last week that will continue to block the state of California from implementing a 20 percent across-the-board reduction to in-home support services for the elderly and disabled. The cuts would have affected 372,000 Californians who rely on this program and the services provided by AFSCME members.

Jacket and Blanket Drive

Local 3090 is joining District Council 36 to collect gently worn jackets, blankets and sweaters for the homeless. Please drop them off in the large donation boxes that have been placed on each floor of the Council 36 building on Shatto Pl. The drive runs through Jan. 15.
