City Job Cuts Will Be Difficult To Implement

(LA Weekly, 3/4/10)

As Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's chief of staff ordered department heads to move forward with 542 of as many as 4,000 proposed layoffs, a personnel manager said she didn't think it would be possible to lose thousands of city workers by July 1, when the new fiscal year kicks in. Another roadblock to layoffs is the Coalition of L.A. City Unions, which has a deal in place protecting many jobs through next fiscal year. Of the 542 slated to go soon, 121 would come from Department of Recreation and Parks, 100 would come from libraries, and 100 would come from street services, including 48 tree trimmers.

“Save The Library” Campaign Organizes Against Proposed Cuts

(KPFK Radio, 3/3/10)

The Los Angeles Public Library argues that cuts and layoffs to its branch and indeed to the system citywide would be extremely detrimental. At a time when the economy is not improving for most people, the institution of city libraries has been beneficial to ever increasing patrons in multiple areas from providing free internet access to assistance programs for job seekers. In order to raise public awareness and support against the impending cuts, the Librarians Guild has organized a “Save the Library” campaign.

L.A. council agrees to give up some special funds

(LA Times, 2/25/10)

The Los Angeles City Council voted Thursday to give up $12 million that would normally pay for pet projects in their districts and instead use it to replenish the city’s emergency reserve. The city's credit rating has been downgraded in recent days in part because officials plan to tap that reserve to counter the city's $212-million budget shortfall.

Council looks into keeping city workers

(LA Daily News, 2/24/10)

Moved by teary testimony from city workers fearing job losses, the City Council Wednesday asked staff to look into cutting the value of all city contracts by 10 percent and consider whether city workers could do some of that work. "It's time for us to lay off private contractors and keep our city workers," Councilwoman Janice Hahn said on another day of emotional testimony about the prospect of laying off 4,000 workers over the next 18 months.

Angry City Workers Give Council an Earful

(NBC LA, 2/24/10)

What’s at stake if Los Angeles goes ahead with plans to lay off 4000 city workers? If you ask the workers whose jobs may be on the line, the answer is a whole lot. A number of city workers had the chance on Wednesday to go before the City Council and tell members what services will be hurt with the loss of jobs.

L.A.'s financial rating downgraded by Standard & Poor's

(LA Times, 2/23/10)

The last of the nation’s top financial credit agencies took action Tuesday to downgrade Los Angeles’ credit rating, which will almost assuredly increase the city’s cost for borrowing money… Though Standard & Poor’s acknowledged that the city had taken steps to close its budget gap -- including last week's authorization to eliminate 4,000 city workers to save as much as $300 million next fiscal year. But analysts continue to be concerned about the city’s structural deficit.

Help Unions Help Haiti

haiti

Unions across the country are mobilizing volunteers and donation efforts to help survivors in Haiti. AFSCME 3090 is providing the following information for members who would like to take part in the relief efforts.

Labor is working to send union nurses from National Nurses United to Haiti to provide urgent medical care. Nine local doctors and nurses are already on their way, and more than 11,000 nurses nationally have signed up. However, the cost of getting these vital professionals to Haiti is a barrier. You can visit www.sendanurse.org to donate.
