$400 Million in Uncollected Taxes is Good Place for City to Start Looking for Savings

President Alice Goff

Feb. 5, 2010

Let’s be clear, our union as part of the Coalition for L.A. City Unions has done more than its fair share of sacrifice in this continuing budget crisis the City of Los Angeles faces. At this time, City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana along with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other City officials seek to eliminate more than 1,500 city jobs to help close a $208 million budget gap.

Thanks to 3090 Members who helped pack LA City Council Chambers today. Because of the compelling stories the impact the cuts would have on city services, the council promised not to act for 30 days. Council President Eric Garcetti, who crafted the compromise, said the delay would give the council breathing room as it searches for alternatives to layoffs. "This does not stop the wheels from turning on layoffs should all other options fall short," he said.

Villaraigosa says layoffs not the only budget solution

(LA Times, 1/29/10)

Standing outside his office, the mayor told reporters this afternoon that the city could address much of the financial crisis if public employee unions agreed to reduce their pay -- or let some city services be performed by cheaper, private contractors. Help Unions Help Haiti

haiti

Unions across the country are mobilizing volunteers and donation efforts to help survivors in Haiti. AFSCME 3090 is providing the following information for members who would like to take part in the relief efforts.

Labor is working to send union nurses from National Nurses United to Haiti to provide urgent medical care. Nine local doctors and nurses are already on their way, and more than 11,000 nurses nationally have signed up. However, the cost of getting these vital professionals to Haiti is a barrier. You can visit www.sendanurse.org to donate.
