Work Right with Local 3090 ERGOnomics: Energizing Resources
for a Great Office
Sheryl Moore
Health & Safety Coordinator
Do you ever experience fatigue or discomfort at work?
You're not alone. Modern worklife, including sitting at
a computer or being on a telephone for hours, are at the
root of some of the most common health and safety concerns
on the job today. We work in awkward positions or with excessive
effort, damaging our muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves
and blood vessels along the way. Eventually these disorders
can impair our ability to work - and live - effectively.
But there is a solution and Local 3090 wants to help.
Ergonomics is the process of fitting the job to the worker,
not the worker to the job. Ergonomics training helps you
identify the symptoms and risk factors for ergonomic-related
disorders, analyze your job tasks for potential ergonomic
problems and take action to make your job more people friendly.
Your union representatives fought hard for and won, the
right to conduct a city-funded ergonomics training on City
time in the last contract negotiations. Now, in collaboration
with UCLA's Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) program,
we are bringing this training to you.
Participation is easy. Your department's training coordinators
will notify you of the dates, times and location of the training.
Attend the date and time you designate and participate in
the "interactive activities."
From each training, we are compiling your "frequently
asked questions", recruiting "peer health advisors" and
opening requests for on-site workstation assessments.
As the Local's Health and Safety Coordinator, I look forward
to greeting each of as we promote awareness and simple
solutions to an ever growing issue throughout our employment.
